How to manage your stress

Free help and advice on stress management

1. The quick fix - the 30 second stress buster

1. Relax your arms and hands, making sure that your fingers are hanging loose (as opposed to them being clenched).

2. Slightly curl your toes under your feet.

3. With your mouth closed gently push your tongue against the back of your top teeth.

4. Be consciously aware of your breathing and take four or five deep breaths*

* By deep breaths I mean expanding your abdominal muscles with each in-breath and pulling them back in with each out-breath. For some people this can take a little bit of practice.

Use the above routine every morning and evening, and also use it whenever you begin to notice any signs of stress. With practice you can use this technique in any situation, whether you are sitting, standing or lying down. IT WORKS!

2. The long-term solution

Do you have a stressful job?

Do certain situations make you feel stressed?

Do certain people stress you out?

You may well have answered 'yes' to some of these questions. You may genuinely believe that other people and situations stress you out, but you are wrong...you are mistaken.

What actually causes stress is your thinking. It's what you 'think' about your job that creates stress; it's what you 'think' about certain other people that creates stress.

In other words, all of your stress is created internally...it's created by you. Of course you don't do this intentionally but it is a fact that you create your own stress.

This is very good news because it means that if you create your own stress you can also manage it. In actual fact no-one else can manage your stress. Only you can do that.

So how do you do this?

Well one way would be to change your thinking (and I'm about your so-called inner dialogue)from negative to positive. Unfortunately this is quite difficult and can take a lot of effort.

A much easier option is to recognise your internal dialogue as just thoughts. You see thoughts are nothing more than formless energy, and furthermore they all originated in the past. So if you have any negative thoughts from the past, not only are they out-of-date, they don't actually have any power. They only have power if you allow them to have power. Negative thoughts only have power if you act upon them. But if you recognise your negative thoughts as 'just thoughts' then they have much less power over you, and you are set free.
